GRAYLING

REFUSE SUBLIME

Grayling

is a webcomic that ran from 2011 to 2025 and is now finished. It has a similar level of content to Greek & Roman or Norse Myth: there is madness, monsters, heightened emotion, nudity, & violence. Like myths, it's appropriate for teens (13+) but please exercise caution & read only at your own discretion.

Books 1-6 are black & white; books 7-10 are full color. You can read it online in a browser in the natively hosted/high quality Read directory. Alternatively, there is Comicfury, a robust, old-school webcomic platform with all the frills.

Each "book" of the comic is less than 200 pages and meant to be read in a sitting, taking 45 minutes to an hour. If you require more frequent rest points, I've added "reading chapters" to the Comicfury version that break up the comic by scene. There are, in total, a hundred scenes.

If you have unreliable internet access, you can download the comic in pdf form to read offline on your device of choice.

The last major update to the PDFs was on: Fri Oct 9 2026. If your files are older than this, please replace them, I've updated various things. Thank you!

Alternatively, you can get these files off of Archive.org where I have uploaded the comics myself. All the random stuff should be on there too, like old!Grayling image files, annotated old!Grayling, and eventually Patreon ephemera (all the exclusive stuff will be free after a year or two).

You can also Buy PHYSICAL COPIES of Grayling on INDYPLANET, a print-on-demand online comic shop. This is of course what I wrote the comic to be read as, a physical book. The books are REALLY nice, feel good in the hands, and the colors & artwork look great, but the wait may be a little long. u_u I do stock a small amount of books in my online shop so I can get signed copies into peoples' hands, and if you're in the United States those will arrive more quickly from me than they will from IP.

REFUSE SUBLIME

is the sequel to Grayling. It updates every other week on Tuesday, Thursday, & Saturday (click here for the calendar). I'm planning ten full-color 120-200 page books, the same approximate size as Grayling.

Since REFUSE SUBLIME is currently a work in progress, you can only read it online.

INFORMATION

I publish under the pen names Arby K, Arborwin K, Arby Kemfdal, & Arborwin Kemfdal OR my real name Marlene Janda (or McJanda, my married name). Call me Arby! You can go ahead and use she/her pronouns for me as well, but I'm not particular.

Grayling and REFUSE SUBLIME are paracosm-based works I have developed since childhood, so a lot of it is decades old.

My stuff can be described as body horror, occult, fantasy, and family drama.

I'm USAmerican, an elder millennial, born in the midwest & grew up in the northeast. Now I live in the magnificent state of New Mexico with my two wives, Minaerva (who writes & lays out TTRPG books! check out her work, she's so multi-talented!) and pro-roleplayer (very good at horrifying everyone during a game) Beatrix, alongside our two cats, Gio and Kushi.

For general or work inquiries you can contact me via email. Due to health issues, I can have memory problems and forget things. If you believe an obligation has slipped my mind, I would really appreciate a reminder via e-mail. Thank you!

A NOTE ON OLD WATERCOLORS - OCT 9 2026

If you purchased a watercolor painting from me in the past and it has aged poorly, eg faded colors and yellowed paper, I will replace it for free! I have always tried to use higher-quality material where I could, but certain things like my index cards were meant to be plentiful/quick/cheap, and were done on index cards, and I used Crayola paint, and mixed paints very carelessly.

Index cards are inconsistent. The ones I've kept in albums are mostly fine, but if they're exposed to sunlight the case may be different, and I have seen older index cards from the 1980s turn a deep yellow, so I understand if one that was displayed might suffer from it. There's also matters of the paper discoloring where it's exposed to other papers/books/materials. These are all pretty natural wear and tear in terms of art, I don't think it's impossible to escape everything, and I honestly find degradations have their charms and the things people complain about often are things I specifically like. I rather like when my paintings age and change. But I do understand if that's not everyone's interest, and certainly a total bleaching of the paint in some cases is too deleterious an effect.

As for why I used Crayola watercolors for years, honestly? Because I really liked them! They were smooth and creamy and bright, and I got a lot of compliments from formal artists who didn't use such poor quality materials. The downside is that the brights faded quickly, the binders are weak in non-toxic paint, and the pigment content is low. I have better paint now and can use a watercolor or bristol weight paper to replace the original. It will look a lot less "neon," but it will be fresh and the colors much richer. The old computer scans of the Crayola paintings I made probably have more accurate color than the originals now do, and I really struggled scanning those on my 1999 HP Viewscan.

Send me a quick phone picture to show me which picture it is and I will get to work on a painting using my newer paints (Winsor & Newton watercolors) on better paper that will last longer. I haven't had a whole lot of luck with international shipment of my original art pieces, they have often been lost, but I will ship anywhere in the USA.

Obviously I cannot completely replicate the old piece completely because my art has changed, but it will be at least something you can display while the old piece goes into retirement. I really care about this, so it would be doing me a favor to submit your poorly aged painting. Also, to be honest, it's for the sake of science... I want to know, y'know...! ....

If you have a painting you want to replace, please e-mail me with the subject "Watercolors" or similar! Thank you!
