Melcey pups, as Gary described, are one of the most prolific and famous of Faidian creatures. Arborwin Adoptions has given out hundreds of them already. It can be difficult to generalize about melceys because like the human race in its ideal, they are all individuals. Melceys are a kind of conglomerate of feline and canine characteristics. I tend to think of melceys as more like cats because I like cats, but the same could be done in the case of someone who likes dogs.
Melcey pups originated as a species of wild predator that inhabited the Purple Savannah surrounding Faidia's cultural centerpoint, Tower. Melceys took some convincing to leave their original home and habitat, but eventually like neccos they learned to enjoy the domesticated life and even took control of some aspects of civilized society themselves. Melceys are fully sentient, but some may only speak Faidian, choosing not to participate in what's considered modern life. All melceys are taught Faidian as babies and may learn English later on in their lives. As Gary already noted, English is the "casual" language.
Melceys are long, thin, very leggy animals, good runners and acrobats, and may be shorthaired, longhaired, or somewhere in between. Their sense of smell is keen and their eyesight especially good for seeing distances. Their fur is characteristically soft and silky, although in some it may be coarser or finer; as always, melceys are so varied a species it's impossible to give the full range of traits they may carry.
Melceys may be named anything, although like neccos they prefer names that are not in English. Remember that they're sentient; would you have liked to have been named "Stick" when you were born? I hope not...
One of the most important features of melceys is their close affiliation with Faidia's elementals. Their ability to exert elemental powers is unique to their species and no other creature offered by Arborwin Adoptions is capable of it. A melcey born under a certain theme will be able to cast "spells" (called iot [ee-ott] in Faidian, literally translated "nets"] under their born element. They will also display behaviors, preferences, and other traits common to that theme. | Melcey Themes |
(patron elemental Funaner, color gold) This theme is one of the more common ones because of its powers. The colors of Earth pups are usually greens, browns, and other earth tones. The powers of Earth pups includes the ability to find the best terrain in a certain area to run on, as well as an attraction to precious stones and metals. Associated with Life, Time, and Sky. |
(patron elemental Moranerial, color red) The pups born with a fire theme are colored in the "hot" colors: red, yellow, purple, orange, warm blues. They specifically focus on the use of temperature, and are capable of creating and controlling flame. Associated strongly with Darkness. |
(patron elemental Vivanerial, color blue) Water pups are born in cool, dark colors like blue and purple (purple counts as both a hot and cool color). They can control water in various ways, depending on the individual. Their abilities in healing are vital, since they are safer than whites, and they can also swim very well. Associated strongly with White. |
(patron elemental Folanerial, color light blue) The pups born with Sky themes are cool, light colors. Some Sky pups have the ability to create currents of electricity, while others have the ability to control winds and other weather elements. Associated strongly with Life, less so Time and Earth. |
(patron elemental Callanerial, color black) The pups born to darkness are rather rare. They are usually gray and with a heavy build, although not always. As their patron elemental is capable of doing, Darknesses can control death and are capable of associating with ghosts as well as some control over the negative end of the emotional spectrum. Associated strongly with fire. |
(patron elemental Lemanerial, color green) The pups born to Life theme are adept, like their patron, at controlling living things, so you can find them often having fascinations with plants and small animals. For this reason they're not very good mousers but are excellent in the garden. Life themed melceys often have floppy, soft ears. Associated strongly with Earth, less so with Time and Sky. |
(patron elemental Osanerial, color periwinkle) A very recent elemental and theme with very little history, their patron being the first of the Senses, a new branch of elementals. They have keen hearing and are in possession of some very large (for melceys, even) ears. They also can mimic sounds they hear. They enjoy music a great deal, but are rather too lazy to play it themselves. Like their patron, they can often be seen with their headphones on. No associations at this point. |
(patron elemental Mayaner, color white) The opposite orientation of Darkness pups, whites are more rare. They have strong capabilities in healing and positive emotion and consistently have blue-colored eyes. They are not "angel" melceys, in personality or behavior. White melceys often have a fascination (bordering on obsession) with orderliness and perfection, which most other melceys could care less about. The more extreme whites who let their obsessions control them tend to be loners. In healing, whites can restore the normal condition of a body, but if they go a touch overboard, they can literally over-organize an organism so that it crystallizes and dies. They cannot consistently treat a disease over a long period of time, for instance, unlike waters, who can soothe wounds and encourage the body to actually heal itself over an extended period. Life and earth melceys are particularly annoyed by overbearing whites. Riptides often can't stand them. Associated strongly with water. |
(patron elemental Ellioner, color purple) Extremely rare and powerful melcey pups, all of which are winged. Like their patron they have control over time. The nature of their power is horribly strong, being capable of manipulating the age of things to travel in time, but their power can be overridden in emergencies by Earth and Life melceys. Associated strongly with Life, less so Sky and Earth. |
(patron elemental Raenerial, color pink/rose) Fairly rare and dangerous melcey pups, all Riptide melceys are female. They represent insanity, being able to control negative emotions to the point of eliciting violence. Riptide melceys are fairly calm and cold in demeanor themselves, but they need an owner who has strong mental capacity, or eventually the taint of the melcey's power will make anyone nearby lose their minds. Weakly associated with Darkness, strongly with Chaos. |
(minion-oriented, patron elemental Callanerial, color gray) The graphite theme is a type of sub-theme to Earth but leans more towards the Callaneriallian side of the branches because of its imaginative nature. Essentially, melceys of this type are the "artist" melceys. They enjoy viewing and creating art in many forms, from drawing and painting to photography and film. They are very intelligent, but their personality will sometimes change with the company, always making changes in their own manner to make others more comfortable. Strongly associated with Darkness, Fire, and Time. |
(minion-oriented, patron elemental Callanerial, white w/ rainbow colors) These melceys are a rarer type of theme. The minion they are based on is Callaneriallian, but their exact nature is more Lemaneriallian, so you have a mixed bag. They are usually white with striped or patterned colors, often with a candyish look to them. They have thin, whip like tails, like greyhounds, and small pointy ears. Candy melceys are flighty and probably closest in manner to toy poodles ^_^; Associated strongly with Life, less so Earth. |

(patron elemental Iyanerial, color emerald) Virus melceys are extremely new, their patron elemental being only a few months old. As their name suggests, Virus themed melceys have control over disease and pestilence. They can both cure and propagate disease. Although they can also control bacteria, they are more powerful with viruses, which are not under the control of Lemanerial and the life melceys. Virus melceys can be recognized by their thick manes, strangely colored eyes, and their tendency to have lion tails. Severely beautiful, virus melceys have a strong aesthetic and moral standard. Although they may seem curt and unapproachable, they are in truth very loyal and passionate friends once their respect is won. Strongly associated with Life and Riptide. |

(minion oriented, color ruby) Bloods are instantly recognizable by their unusual leg arrangements. Although it varies with different types, most of the bloods you will see have only their hind legs. More advanced types with have a full set of legs or smaller front legs that allow them to walk bipedally. The most common bloods are small, cheerful fellows that represent the red blood cells. Other larger, more rare types represent white blood cells, and there are also may be even smaller platelet types. The full range of this theme has not been explored yet, but they are all fairly even-tempered, friendly, and cuddly creatures, despite the connotations of their name. They are all, however, mildly vampiric, and occasionally need to be fed a small amount of fresh blood from other melceys or their owner. They can still move about during the daytime. Strongly associated with Life and Darkness, less so Virus. |

(patron elemental Funaner, color rose) Because I don't have a theme beginning with Q. An advanced breed of earth melcey, quartzes have silky, almost transperant fur. For some reason, quartzes are always male; it's thought to be a gender linked trait. Quartzes are almost impossible to breed; they're thought to be sterile, but nobody really gets to the point of actually knowing, since they refuse to mate with females. |

(patron elemental Funaner, color ivory) Silk melceys are another type of earth melcey, with a little bit of the graphite's creativity mixed in. Distinguished by their green eyes, silky coats, tufted feet, and pastellic coloring, silks are experts with cloth. The production of fine clothing has long been a tradition at Tower, and these melceys represent the culmination of generations of skill. They have gentle but firm personalities, and are accustomed to ordering other melceys about (since they are often given leadership positions in the work shops of Tower). This theme was created by Saliska. |

(patron elemental Folanerial, colors bright red, yellow, & black) These melceys are not only built for speed, they love it. Extremely fast and experts at controlling aerodynamics, overdrive melceys are one of the fastest terrestrial animals on Faidia. They may have small featherlike tufts of fur on their feet or ears. They have very short attention spans and are rather high strung, but are overall friendly melceys. This theme was created by Saliska. |

(patron elemental Raenerial, colors dark rainbow) Moon melceys are nocturnal, only preferring to come out at night. They have a peculiar aversion towards metals, especially iron. Since vision is nearly worthless in the dark, these melceys have developed very efficient echolocation, like that used by bats (they make distinct, soft chirping noises no other melceys can produce). Their ears are a characteristic crescent shape. Their colors vary, like the aurora borealis. This theme was created by Fether. |

(patron elemental Folanerial, color cyan) Probably what could be considered a truer-to-form derivation of their patron, Folanerial, Frosts have hostile dispositions, especially in contrast to the more light-hearted, carefree sky melceys who are their kin. Frosts have fairly nice attitudes to start, but they have an unshakeable tendency towards cruelty and holding longstanding grudges. Their powers are more concentrated than sky melceys', making them sterile, and are often extremely bitter as a result. Easily annoyed, they have little tolerance for the company of more cheerful creatures, and delight in the discomfort and unhappiness of others. Most often female, males of this theme are extremely rare. Frosts undeniably have great intelligence, however, they customarily will use it only for destructive means. Frosts are often born with abnormally large claws and rough, spiky fur. This theme is ancient, but was "discontinued" by the elementals from widespread use because of their behavior. This theme was created by Sphinx. |
