Neccos are a small species of Faidian dragon. Their maximum size is around 3 pounds, although they average around 1 1/2 pounds, the size of small kittens. Their bodies are covered in a soft, thin, plushy kind of fur. Neccos are sentient and will choose themselves whether you're worth speaking to or not. Usually, however, neccos are downright chatterboxes and it can be difficult getting them to be quiet.
In Faidia neccos are rare in the wild; most neccos liked the easy life of captivity so much they mass migrated into peoples' homes on their own. They love to eat and carouse, but some of them are very responsible when it is in their best advantage to be -- hence the Necco Air mailing service. The tips some neccos get for their work are considerable.
Most neccos are born with two colors; more than two colors is fairly rare and one solid color even more scarce. Most neccos are the Common breed with one pair of wings, but Delye and other necco fanciers have bred a four-winged variety similar to the arrangement of butterfly or dragonfly wings. Raimo and Renad, which can be seen in the swarm, are Dragonfly neccos.
Neccos tend to stick to one mate like geese. They're extremely monogamous and once they choose to stick together, they stick together. However, this doesn't count in breeding -- by monogamous they mean they won't live with another necco. That doesn't mean they won't mate with another necco. So they get away with being rather loose in that category, which is fortunate for breeders who worry that neccos might go extinct because of their monogamous ways.
Neccos in the wild and often in captivity live in groups called swarms. Swarms have a minimum of five members; it is said that if the group is large enough to rob a bank, it's a swarm. Neccos are clever theives. They require almost constant amusement/activity/preoccupation (not unlike my friend Delye), so it's always a good idea to have a) more than 1 necco so they can amuse each other b) melceys with your neccos, who are near matches in general personality. Otherwise your necco might be using you for a trampoline at 4 am one of these days.
Neccos were named after the New England Confectionary Company because Arborwin is obsessed with Necco wafers. |
